Practicing Your Welsh on the Mountains of Snowdonia
This year, for the first time a mountaineering and outdoor leadership business will extend its services to offering opportunities for Welsh learners to develop their confidence in the language whilst walking the mountains of Snowdonia.
Stephen Jones from Dyffryn Ogwen founder and chief activity leader with the mountain skills business Anelu – Aim Higher has a vision of leading mountain walks for Welsh learners to increase their confidence in the language.
Stephen explained: “Mountain walking coupled with conversation whilst exploring Snowdonia is an excellent way for Welsh learners to integrate in to the Welsh speaking community and getting to know Snowdonia landscapes and heritage through the eyes of local Welsh people.
“I often lead people on mountaineering trips in Snowdonia, many live locally but aren’t able to speak Welsh. They have an interest and a great deal of good will towards the language; we need to take advantage of this to promote the language’s place within the outdoor activity sector.”
Anelu’s partner in the initiative is the Gwynedd based Menter Iaith: Hunaniaith.
Ifan Llewelyn Jones, Language Development office at Hunaniaith explained: “One of Hunaniaith’s aims is to integrate Welsh learners in activities in their communities, giving them the opportunity to chat to Welsh speakers in a supportive environment. Stephen’s idea is a brilliant opportunity to achieve this.”
Ifan went on to say that first language Welsh speakers are also welcome to join the walks. He said: “Language learners need to gain the full experience so we need Welsh speakers to join us as well. So if there are any Welsh speakers who would like to join our walks they would be welcome to come along.”
Anelu – Aim Higher’s first two walks for Welsh learners will take place on 8 and 10 July 2019. The first will leave Tanygrisaiu, Blaenau Ffestiniog, through Cwm Orthin and on to Croesor, the second from Bethesda, past Mynydd Llandygai, Dinorwig and finishing at Llanberis.
