Spirit of 2012 funding secured to improve lives through music in Gwynedd

Date: 27/11/2018

The Spirit of 2012 charity (launched following the London Olympic Games of 2012) has announced the three projects which will receive funding over a period of 3 years as a result of their ‘Music Challenge Fund’ and these include one project from Wales.

Led by Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias in partnership with Gwynedd Council’s Learning Disability Team, the project ‘Canfod y Gân / Discover the Song’ will bring disabled and nondisabled people together to take part in regular music sessions in three locations across Gwynedd – Caernarfon, Pwllheli and Harlech. Working in collaboration with other organisations and community groups, performances will also be arranged within the communities and at other locations across Wales.

Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias Director, Meinir Llwyd Roberts said: “We are delighted to receive this Investment and look forward to working with the Gwynedd Council’s Learning Disability Team to develop the opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to come together to make music across the county. Based on our belief that every person has a ‘song to sing’ and that every person deserves the opportunity to discover and share their song, ‘Canfod y Gân / Discover the Song’ will focus on improving the mental health and wellbeing of participants and create pathways for continued participation in music.”

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing said: “As a Council, we are keen to remove any barriers which affects people’s abilities to live their lives to the full. This project in partnership with Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias will offer fantastic opportunities for people to engage in music activities in Caernarfon, Pwllheli and Harlech.”

Helen Fôn Owen from Gwynedd Council’s Adult, Health and Wellbeing Department added: “The project provides a wonderful opportunity to promote the wellbeing of people who have learning disabilities by giving them the chance to engage and socialise with their peers, professional musicians and volunteers. We’re delighted also that the provision will reach communities across the county.”
