Looking After Each Other - Community Arts & the 5 Ways to Wellbeing
Gwynedd Council's Community Arts Unit is working with three special projects aimed at helping people achieve the 5 Ways to Wellbeing through the arts. The aim is to provide opportunities for members of the community to learn new things, be active, connect with others, and to give and to take notice. Similar to the need to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day to keep physically healthy research shows that doing these 5 steps contributes positively to our mental health and wellbeing. Various arts activities will be available to the people of Gwynedd at Siop Siafins, Caernarfon, the Llŷn Maritime Museum, Nefyn and the Welsh Slate Museum, Llanberis.
Lora Morgan from Siop Siafins will be running a series of craft workshops for older people from her shop on Palace Street, Caernarfon called Craft for Wellbeing. Sessions will include opportunities for felting, weaving, fabric printing, macramé, Christmas crafts, decoupage, silk painting and mat making. The shop offers a relaxed and creative atmosphere to work in over a cuppa. Lora is vastly experienced at running such activities, and has worked for two older people's charities as well as in a care home.
Nefyn will also host a series of activities offered to residents over the autumn and winter months, extending the Museum's opening hours. There will be family craft activities, textiles and nature sessions and two musical programs called Creu Cerdd and Tiwn Tinc a Tonc.
In Llanberis a special partnership scheme will be run between the Welsh Slate Museum and Caban (Bangor University Dementia Group). A program of activities is planned for those living with dementia and their families. There will be opportunities to attend a music workshop, make rags mats, arts and crafts and going on walks.
All of the activities are designed to help the people of Gwynedd achieve the 5 Ways to Wellbeing through creativity and the arts. Our hope is that the projects will introduce people to new ideas and provide opportunities for people to make new connections through learning, being active, taking notice and giving by contributing in a group atmosphere.
All schemes will be evaluated so that we can learn from this new project, and we hope to continue to support such opportunities for the future benefit of the people of Gwynedd.
