Changes to a birth certificate
Change a child’s surname
A child’s surname can only be changed on the original birth certificate to correct a spelling mistake.
However, in the following instances, a child can be re-registered.
- the child's natural parents are married after the baby is registered.
- the natural father’s details are not noted on the original certificate as he could not be present at the registration
In these instances, the child’s surname can be changed to that of either the mother or father, or a combination of both – as long as both parents agree to the change.
There is no fee for re-registering a birth, but the regular fees will apply for any additional copies.
