Worried about an adult / abuse

If you think a person is at risk of being abused it is very important to let the Council or the police know.

Types of abuse

  • physical abuse: hitting, shaking, throwing, burning or using medicine to harm someone.
  • emotional abuse: making someone feel worthless, saying that no one loves them, instilling fear - threatening harm, being nasty, exploiting for the purpose of sex or work.
  • sexual abuse: forcing someone to take part in sexual activity, forcing someone to look at and/or create pornographic material. Encourage someone to behave in a sexually inappropriate way.
  • negligence: Not providing food, accommodation and suitable clothing, not protecting against harm or physical danger, not ensuring access to care or medical treatment; not ensuring that a child receives regular education.
  • financial abuse: adults can suffer from theft, being cheated, pressure to include a will or power of attorney.

What information would need to be shared?

  • What is your concern and how did it become apparent?
  • What is the name of the individual who is suffering, their date of birth, address and family details? (if available)
  • Who has caused you concern and are there other witnesses?
  • Your call will be recorded and information about the individual will be checked to see if they are known.
  • Information will be collected from other agencies that have a possible connection with the individual.
  • Based on the information available a decision will be made to investigate your concern.
  • This can lead to comprehensive work to protect the individual from suffering further harm.
