Modernising Education

The Education Department aims to promote the achievement and well-being of Gwynedd’s children and young people by ensuring the effective governance, leadership and management of our schools. The Modernising Education team aims to deliver a series of projects to meet the aspirations of the Education Strategy.

Ysgol Treferthyr, Cricieth

Investment: £8 million
Status: Ongoing

A brand new school is under construction in Cricieth following Cyngor Gwynedd securing over £8 million in funding through the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Learning Communities Programme and the Council’s financial contribution. The new school will offer 150 spaces including an Early Years Unit and an Additional Learning Assessment Unit. We aim to open the school on 1 September 2024. More about this project. 

 

Ysgol Bontnewydd

Investment: £12 million
Status: Ongoing

Cyngor Gwynedd has welcomed Welsh Government's announcement of nearly £12 million investment to build a brand-new school at Bontnewydd, together with first class community facilities. Its design, construction and the associated elements will reflect Cyngor Gwynedd’s aspirations to be innovative, progressive, contemporary, and environmentally friendly. 

 

Ysgol Y Garnedd, Bangor

In November 2020, a new Ysgol Garnedd opened its doors following receiving £12.7 million from Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government. The new school provides education for the pupils of Ysgol Garnedd, Glanadda and Coed Mawr and now accommodates 420 children. 

 

Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn, Bala

Investment: £10.27 million

The doors of this lifelong school (ages 3-19) have been opened since September 2019. Three schools were combined, Ysgol Bro Tegid, Ysgol Beuno Sant and Ysgol Y Berwyn High School. The new school offers up to 560 pupils, including nursery aged children between 3 and 4 years old.

The new campus has dedicated arts resources including a dance studio and theatre with a digital projector to show films. There is also a 3G sports pitch, and a library.

  

Ysgol Glancegin, Bangor

Investment: £5.1 million

A brand new school was built for Ysgol Glancegin serving children of the Maesgeirchen area, Bangor. The school opened in September 2017 and was built by Wynne Construction, a company from North Wales. The final design of the school includes the ideas of pupils, staff and members of the community to ensure that the school provides an appropriate space to deliver all aspects of the curriculum. The new school offers space for specialist support interventions and can accommodate up to 280 children.

  

Ysgol Bro Llifon, Y Groeslon

Investment: £4.48 million
Status: Completed

Following an investment by the Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council, this new school was opened in September 2015. Ysgol Bro Llifon provides for Groeslon, Carmel and Fron area. The school was built by a local company called Watkin Jones, and was designed around the original building. The new school can accommodate up to 180 children. 

 

Ysgol Hafod Lon

Investment: £13 million
Status: Completed

The new Ysgol Hafod Lon is located in Penrhyndeudraeth and replaces the former school, which was located in Y Ffor, near Pwllheli. Ysgol Hafod Lon provides education for up to 100 children and young people with additional learning needs from Dwyfor and Meirionnydd areas. 

The modern classrooms have the latest resources which includes a hydro therapy pool, therapy rooms, sensory equipment, an outdoor play area and a short break residential unit. The school also has a garden and cafe, where older pupils are given the chance to develop their enterprise and business skills. 

 

Ysgol Bro Idris, Meirionnydd

Investment: £4.84 million
Status: Completed

Ysgol Bro Idris (for ages 3-16) was opened in September 2017. There are 5 sites for the Primary pupils, including sites in Rhyd Y Main, Dinas Mawddwy, Dolgellau Primary, Llanelltud and Friog as well as a main Secondary site in Dolgellau. Ysgol Y Gader, Ysgol Dolgellau, Ysgol Brithdir, Ysgol Ieuan Gwynedd, Ysgol Dinas Mawdddwy, Ysgol Llanelltud, Ysgol Friog, Ysgol Clogau, and Ysgol Ganllwyd were closed on 31 August 2017, and Ysgol Llanfachreth closed on 31 August 2016.
