The Unit is responsible for:
- offering advice on minerals and waste planning issues (e.g. quarrying activities, waste control developments such as facilities for recycling, composting, etc)
- dealing with planning applications for mining activities and for waste management facilities. To submit an application download the Minerals and waste planning application form and send it to the address on the form
- monitoring sites to ensure compliance with conditions

- providing input into the Local Development Plan on issues concerning minerals and waste planning policy
- providing input into regional and national mineral and waste planning issues

The Unit is responsible for:
- producing a Local Development Plan for the Gwynedd Council Local Planning Authority area
- monitoring the adopted Gwynedd Unitary Development Plan
- producing Supplementary Planning Guidance
- providing specialist advice (including advice on planning applications, proposals, enforcement issues, appeals) and consultation responses on Planning Policy issues for the authority, external organisations and the general public
- undertaking Housing Land Availability Surveys on a yearly basis
- contributing to the production of Development Briefs and Development Strategies

- preparing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Management Plan
- working on projects that help to maintain Llŷn's unique identity
- administering the Sustainable Development Fund to provide grants for projects that support and promote a more sustainable way of life
- maintaining 5 Lôn Las paths - for walking and cycling
- maintaining the Llŷn Coastal Path and implementing the Gwynedd portion of the All Wales Coastal Path Scheme
