Cyngor Gwynedd holds Easter Nature Discovery Day
Date: 24/03/2023
Are you interested in learning more about the nature and the precious habitats of Gwynedd while taking part in a fun Easter activity?
If so, come along to the Easter Nature Discovery Day at Morfa Madryn near Abergwyngregyn on Sunday, 2 April where there will be a warm welcome for the whole family by Cyngor Gwynedd's Biodiversity Service and the project's partners.
The site can be reached by taking the Coast Path from Llanfairfechan, which is accessible to wheelchair or scooter users, so all can come along to enjoy the fun and learn about nature.
Some of the main attractions of the day will be:
• 'Every egg counts' trail with chocolate egg prizes.
• Meet the cattle - learn about the important work they do on the reserve.
• Mushroom Hunting and Moth Safari with a local expert.
• Poo Detective Workshop.
• Build bird boxes.
• Nature Crafts Club.
• Nature Discovery Sessions.
• And much more!
Over recent months, Cyngor Gwynedd has been working with volunteers and local organisations to carry out essential maintenance and further improvements on the Morfa Madryn nature reserve. The Easter Nature Discovery Day will be an opportunity to see the work and to learn more about the extremely valuable habitat for seabirds that feed on the richness of the mud and sedge.
One of the recent projects was to plant wildflower meadows and manage the land by grazing it with indigenous cattle at appropriate times. The Cattle Meeting and Poo Detective Workshop sessions will be an opportunity to learn more about this. Don't worry - hand washing facilities will be available!
Councillor Dafydd Meurig, Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:
"I urge families to come and enjoy the Easter activities and to learn more about nature and the special habitats we have here in Gwynedd.
"Morfa Madryn is one of the best places in Wales to see the lapwing. But as this extraordinary little bird builds its nest on the ground it is vulnerable to birds such as crows or animals such as foxes stealing its eggs or chicks. Dogs can also disturb them, and it would be very easy for people to accidentally step on a nest, so it is very important to maintain fences to protect them.
"It's amazing to remember that Morfa Madryn was originally created out of a site that was used to store waste from the construction of the A55!
"I really hope that families who attend the day will come back to the reserve over the seasons, especially as it is only a short distance from the Wales Coast Path and offers lots of things for people of all ages to see and to enjoy nature."
Easter activities will be on-offer between 10am and 3pm on 2 April, with free entry. There will also be tea and cake available - free for the first 100 who complete the nature challenges on the day. Something for all ages!
There is parking on the Promenade in Llanfairfechan (A55, Junction 15), to reach the fun day site follow the Wales Coast Path westwards for approximately one mile from the car park. Dogs must be kept on a lead.
The project is part of the work of the Welsh Government's Local Places Plan for Nature.
