Gwernan Brooks from Llanrug is the winner of the Coleg Cymraeg Gwynedd Council Scholarship worth £3,000

Date: 21/09/2023

Gwernan Brooks, who recently completed their A levels in History, Art and Welsh at Ysgol Brynrefail has been awarded the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Gwynedd Council Scholarship to study Welsh at Cardiff University.

The scholarship was established by Gwynedd Council and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to support students living in Gwynedd who choose to study 100% of their degree course at university through the medium of Welsh. The scholarship is awarded to one individual annually, and is worth £1,000 a year (or £3,000 over three years).

Gwernan said,

"It is an honour to receive the scholarship and I am very grateful to Gwynedd Council and the Coleg Cymraeg for the financial support. The scholarship gives young people in my area opportunities and the extra money will become very useful as I gain new experiences and continue my studies at Cardiff University.”

Dr Ioan Matthews, Chief Executive of the Coleg Cymraeg said

"On behalf of the Coleg, I would like to congratulate Gwernan on winning this year's scholarship and wish her every success in the future studying Welsh at Cardiff University. I would also like to thank Gwynedd Council for their continued support over the years."

Councillor Beca Brown, Gwynedd Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said:

"Congratulations to Gwernan on securing this scholarship and we wish her well on her course and into the future. One of the cornerstones of Gwynedd's education system is to ensure that our young people are comfortable and confident to use their Welsh in all walks of life, so naturally we are delighted to see students going on to continue their studies through the medium of Welsh. We are grateful to the Coleg Cymraeg for providing students with these opportunities and look forward to continuing to work with them."

As a leading member of the community in Llanrug participating in voluntary work in the language immersion unit which provides support to children moving from English medium schools to Welsh medium schools, the Welsh language is very important to Gwernan,

"I am grateful to Welsh medium education for all the opportunities I have received at school and beyond and for building my interest to study Welsh as a subject at a higher level. I'm very enthusiastic to promote the Welsh language and represent my area in the captal city."

Details to apply for the Gwynedd County Council 2023 scholarship will appear on the Coleg Cymraeg website in October 2023. The Coleg Cymraeg Courses Search Engine must be used  to check which courses are eligible. Contact the Coleg Cymraeg on 01267 610400 for more information.
