Last chance to have your say on the voting system in Gwynedd

Date: 03/09/2024

A public consultation on possible changes to how councillors are selected to represent local people on Cyngor Gwynedd will close soon.

People who are registered to vote in Gwynedd have less than two weeks left to take part in the exercise and have their say by filling in a short questionnaire.

Cyngor Gwynedd Councillors are currently selected through a Simple Majority electoral system (also known as the first past the post system), which is one of the two voting systems permitted by the Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act 2021. The other option for Welsh councils is a Single Transferable Vote System (also known as proportional representation voting system).

The questionnaire has been available since 15 July and will close on 15 September 2024, following Cyngor Gwynedd’s decision to hold a public consultation on a possible change to the voting system.

Councillor Menna Trenholme, Cyngor Gwynedd's Cabinet Member for the Corporate Support Department, said: “Thank you to everyone who has already taken advantage of the opportunity to share their opinion on the matter. I would like to remind those who wish to have their say, but have not yet done so, that they have until 15 September to take part. The short questionnaire is available on the Cyngor Gwynedd website and is easy to use.

“After the exercise has been completed, Gwynedd councillors will carefully consider all responses and feedback received before making a final decision at a special meeting of the Full Council in October 2024.

“As part of this consultation process, we are also gathering the views of Gwynedd’s community councils, town councils and the city council.”

You can participate in the consultation by visiting Cyngor Gwynedd's website: www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/GwyneddVotingSystem
