Safe routes for Ysgol Treferthyr
Date: 17/07/2024
It is an exciting time as the work on the completion of Ysgol Treferthyr's new home comes to an end, and preparations for opening the site to pupils in September.
The pupils, teachers and governors were given the opportunity to see the school on Friday, 12 July and the Head said that they were overjoyed with the place.
As part of the preparations, work is taking place to ensure that the pupils and parents arrive at the school safely in terms of the paths and roads that lead to Ysgol Treferthyr.
Cyngor Gwynedd has also secured grant funding which will enable plans to introduce further changes from the autumn term onwards.
Lôn Fel Uchaf
With a number of pupils and parents likely to be using Lôn Fel Uchaf to reach the site of the new school from September 2024, Cyngor Gwynedd has presented an order which restricts the use of vehicles on the road. In order to allow children and parents to be able to walk and cycle to and from school, motor vehicles will be prohibited from traveling along the road from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm from Monday to Friday with the exception of:
- access to property on that road,
- agricultural vehicles accessing land off that road,
- vehicles in the service of the local authority in accordance with statutory powers,
- emergency vehicles.
The intention will be to encourage children and parents to use Lôn Fel Uchaf to walk and cycle safely to school. However, as the road is narrow, any pupil or parents walking or cycling are encouraged to take care.
Signs to warn road users of the restrictions will be placed on both entrances to Lôn Fel Uchaf.
Other roads
There will also be adaptations to the other roads leading to the school including a number of new road signs to warn drivers that they are approaching a school and that children are walking to the school. There will also be a temporary pedestrian crossing ready for September, until the new permanent crossing is in place.
Further improvements
Cyngor Gwynedd has recently secured grant support from the Welsh Government's Active Travel and Safe Routes in Communities fund in order to carry out further improvements during the autumn term.
This will include improvements to routes towards the school, that will support safe walking and cycling to school.
In addition, it is intended to install a permanent crossing near the school to support pupils and parents to walk to and from the school.
A bicycle shelter will also be installed on the site as part of efforts to encourage active travel.
