Calling on the people of Gwynedd in need of housing to register with Tai Teg

Date: 31/10/2023

Cyngor Gwynedd’s Housing Action Plan is quickly gaining momentum and the Council is encouraging the people of Gwynedd who need housing to register with Tai Teg.

The aim of this £140 million plan is to address the county's housing shortage and ensure that Gwynedd residents have access to quality, affordable housing in their own communities. This includes providing over 1000 houses by 2027.

In recent developments, Cyngor Gwynedd has undertaken a significant step by purchasing 16 houses under its Buy to Let scheme. The Council intends to let the houses on affordable rent to local people in need of such housing.  By October 2023 properties have been bought in communities throughout Gwynedd, including in Tywyn, Penrhyndeudraeth and Caernarfon.

As part of the Tŷ Gwynedd scheme, the Council is also pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted to build three new houses in Llanberis. These houses will follow the Tŷ Gwynedd principles, which means that they will be affordable, adaptable, sustainable, energy efficient and will improve the wellbeing of the residents living there. Other developments are also well underway in Morfa Nefyn and Bangor along with the purchase of development land in areas across Gwynedd, with the intent of building 90 Tŷ Gwynedd homes for local people by 2027.

The aim of these ambitious schemes is to offer affordable homes for the many local people who cannot buy or rent a house on the open market but may not qualify for social housing.

The first step for people who want to register for a house is to express their interest with Tai Teg, which is the body that administers affordable housing schemes for Cyngor Gwynedd, to:

  1. Make an application for affordable housing once they becomes available.

  1. Help the Council plan for future developments, as this will help identify where affordable housing is needed.

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Cyngor Gwynedd Cabinet Member for Housing and Property said:

“The housing crisis is still proving to be one of the biggest challenges facing Cyngor Gwynedd right now, but it’s very exciting to see that several of the Council's Housing Action Plan projects are coming to fruition. We have already welcomed tenants to some of our new developments and I encourage anyone who needs a house or is currently in unsuitable housing to register with Tai Teg.

“Understanding where to invest our time and resources is critical, and registration helps us make fact-based decisions. This is an important moment for the Council, with new houses being built for the first time in decades and many plans in place to ensure housing for the residents of Gwynedd. Share your needs with us, we are here to prioritise the people of Gwynedd."
